NZAEL Genetic Base Change
As of June 26, 2010 the New Zealand Animal Evaluation system has changed its genetic base to the group of cows that were born in 2000 (from 1995 base) and that had performance records for all traits in the evaluation system in the dairy season 2002/03.

For the Breeding Worth (BW) index you can expect the reported BW for each animal to be approximately $41 lower prior to this genetic base change.

New Zealand Friesian
The New Zealand Friesian has varying amounts of  Holstein blood, but these sires daughters are proven to produce well on a mostly grazed grass diet. Proven by the Strain Trial (Moorepark Ireland and Massey University NZ) to be superior to Holsteins in Fertility, higher Fat & Protein components and Profitability, on both a Grazed Grass system as well as a High Concentrate System.

For those using High Inputs, LIC has an Index identifying those bulls best suited to this farming system.

Good legs and feet have been bred into the New Zealand Friesian. Australian farmers confirm this.

Jersey
The New Zealand Jersey has all the attributes required for a grazed grass system. The Ballydague Trial (Ireland) results (2009), demonstrate that this is the breed to cross over Holsteins, if you are looking for fertile, easy care and profitable animals.

The Jersey/Holstein cross, out performs not only the straight Jersey and straight Holstein-Friesian cow but also the Norwegian Red/Holstein cross cow.

KiwiCross™

The New Zealand KiwiCross was bred by LIC in response to farmers requesting we provide an answer to “Where do we go from here?” after that first cross of Jersey over New Zealand Friesian.
They required an animal, which would take the guesswork out of that second cross and simplify mating management during AI.

Use this breed to put over your already crossbred cows, to keep the size more even whilst retaining some Hybrid Vigour. You can also use this breed to inject higher components into your Holstein cows.
Ideal for heifers as the KiwiCross sires are all easy calving.
